FAQs

What is grief coaching?

A grief coach supports you through your bereavement and works with you to develop a plan. Grief coaches can act as anchors whenever things get too unbearable for you when grieving and gently guide you through your pain and suffering. They are also there to answer any questions that you may have.

Unlike counselling, we look at you as a whole-person. Grief comes with many secondary losses (loss of self, loss of hope, loss of future plans, loss of safety etc.), so we look at all of those things in grief coaching.

What is the Good Grief system?

Kayleigh created the SHINE system to support clients with their grief.

S- Self-compassion, care and validation

H- Holding space for your loved one/s and for yourself

I- Inner work

N- No judgement, timeline or one-size fits all

E- Education about grief

We’ll look at how to open up and make room for intense emotional pain, grounding & centering amidst "emotional storms", self-soothing, grief rituals - how to create and practice them and common barriers to self-compassion and how to overcome them.

How often do we meet?

We meet with clients once a week. Through many years of experience and testing of different time frames, we’ve found that this frequency yields the greatest returns in terms of change. Meeting once a week offers time for reflection and application of learning between sessions, while maintaining the momentum of our work together. Some clients drop down to bi-weekly sessions after a few months.

How long does the coaching process take?

The time frame can vary greatly and depends on a wide range of factors: your goal(s), your commitment and openness to change, your capacity for introspection, your circumstances, how quickly and thoughtfully you complete homework assignments, and other unique factors.

Most clients stay with us for 3/4 months. However, some individuals who partner with us in multiple capacities and for multiple goals work with us for a year or more.

Is coaching similar to therapy?

  • Both are concerned with making concrete changes in your emotional state and life.

  • Both work to understand the self-limiting beliefs or behaviour caused by thoughts and emotions that you may or may not be aware of.

  • Both practices help you grow, change and master your emotions.

Is coaching confidential?

  • What happens in our sessions stays in our sessions.

We fully understand the value of your trust, and we take every precaution to safeguard it. We will provide you with a detailed description of the ethical code that governs every client-coach relationship we enter. This document not only places our standards before you in plain text, but also codifies our commitment to you, the client, and your progress.

What is trauma-informed coaching?

Grief is always traumatic.

The goal of trauma-informed care is to avoid re-traumatising someone.

Trauma-informed coaching aims to help people find meaning and purpose in their lives, fulfill valued roles and engage in a life in a community of their choosing, see themselves as more than their trauma(s), help people identify and pursue avenues to reducing distress and problems in their lives and exercise personal autonomy and self-determination in making choices.

Let us help you find care that's right for you.
